I have Amazon Prime so I wanted to take advantage of it - like when I got my mom her Mother’s Day gift.

Luckily I was able to find something right up her alley - a window planter with spices and some extra seed packs. She loved it.

My stepdad on the other hand. Not so easy. He just got back from a tour in Afghanistan (via the National Guard). However I am going to assume he behaves the same way he did before he left: sitting in his armchair either reading his Bible, watching the Hitler History Channel or some war movie.

So I’m trying to think of what to get him. Not really many Bible-related things (he does not have an iPad or Kindle or anything like that) so I’m left with war-related stuff.

I did actually try to think of something ELSE he would like instead. Such as that Dollar Shave Club thing. But the dollar razors are cheapy-cheap and I don’t have a whole heck of a lot to spend so I didn’t think he’d get his gift card’s worth for twenty-five bucks.

Next I went to food. Oh man, there is a LOT of food stuff out there. I even found a site devoted to bacon (!). But again, the affordable package I felt wasn’t enough.

I returned to Amazon and the dvd idea. First, I consider Game of Thrones since it has a lot of killing in it through battles and whatnot and I personally love the show. Then I remember the Bible part of my stepdad and was like ‘oh, I bet he’s not going to like the full frontal and the sex’. I go to the search engine and settle on Homeland. Again, a great show but it also has some full frontal and some soft porn. I ask for advice and my nephew pretty much advised against it.

Back to the drawing board. They actually have a section called ‘War Movies’ (I shouldn’t have been surprised honestly) and at the top is Band of Brothers. I putz around looking at it, looking at how it ranks among favorite war movie dvds (yes, there is a list of that too). I like the cool can-look of the box so I order it (without consulting) and then post that I’d decided on it.

My nephew promptly informs me that he thinks my stepdad already has it. Ugh! So I quickly go to Amazon and cancel the order. While I am there I see one of their (many) front page ads. One is for a box set of the first four Song and Fire and Ice (aka the books Game of Thrones is based).

I figure that although he likely wouldn’t be able to handle the show, he’d likely enjoy the books. I say that when I have been having a hard time reading them myself. It’s not that they are bad. Far from it. I was just having a hard time getting through all the bad things that kept happening. If you are familiar with the show, you know what I mean.

So now the books with it’s included message is on it’s way to my stepdad’s door or mailbox. Only time will tell if he enjoys the series (he loves The Lord of the Rings).

And thus ends my quest for a Father’s Day gift that consists of something different than the male version of a scarf.
